For several centuries, it was an important spiritual centre for the surrounding villages and hamlets.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"628\" data-end=\"631\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"633\" data-end=\"683\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><strong data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"683\">An old parish with a large territory<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"1016\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Since the Middle Ages, Oizy has established itself as an important <strong data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"744\">mother parish<\/strong> on which many towns depended. Its territory included <strong data-start=\"823\" data-end=\"837\">Baillamont<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"853\">Waillamont<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"855\" data-end=\"865\">Aisies<\/strong>the <strong data-start=\"870\" data-end=\"887\">Achy house<\/strong>, The mills are known as Rouillaumoulin, Royaumoulin and Ruaumoulin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1018\" data-end=\"1470\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\">In the XVI\u1d49 century, faced with the remoteness of the hamlets and the increase in population, several <strong data-start=\"1115\" data-end=\"1147\">parish reorganisations<\/strong> are in place. Other chapels were also created, notably at <strong data-start=\"1390\" data-end=\"1404\">Petit-Fays<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1421\">Monceau<\/strong>, making it easier for residents to worship.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1475\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1520\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><strong data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"1520\">Archives and religious organisation<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1522\" data-end=\"1796\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\">The parish archives of Oizy contain important documents in Latin relating to the\u2019<strong data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1637\">erection of chapels<\/strong> and to the creation of new parishes at the end of the XVI\u1d49 century. These texts bear witness to the major administrative and spiritual role played by Oizy in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1798\" data-end=\"2166\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Over the centuries, many <strong data-start=\"1830\" data-end=\"1851\">parish priests and vicars<\/strong> succeeded one another at the head of the parish. Some ministered for long periods, making a deep impression on the local community through their pastoral commitment. They include, <strong data-start=\"2039\" data-end=\"2055\">Jean Collart<\/strong>, who was parish priest from 1685 to 1738, administered the parish for more than fifty years and was buried in the church in Oizy.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2171\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2173\" data-end=\"2201\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><strong data-start=\"2177\" data-end=\"2201\">The parish church<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2203\" data-end=\"2567\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\">The church in Oizy is the historic and spiritual heart of the village. It was enriched in <strong data-start=\"2289\" data-end=\"2297\">1703<\/strong> a <strong data-start=\"2304\" data-end=\"2324\">chair of truth<\/strong> This remarkable building, commissioned under the pastorate of Philippe de Bouillon, illustrates the importance attached to preaching and religious teaching. The building, which has been maintained and modified over the years, remains a key part of the local heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2569\" data-end=\"2572\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2608\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><strong data-start=\"2578\" data-end=\"2608\">From the XIX\u1d49 century to the present day<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2610\" data-end=\"2880\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\">In the XIX\u1d49 and XX\u1d49 centuries, the parish continued to play an essential role in the religious and social life of Oizy. The serving priests, often active in several neighbouring villages, accompanied the inhabitants through the major changes in rural society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"3085\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Although the permanent presence of a parish priest has disappeared, the parish retains all its character. <strong data-start=\"2972\" data-end=\"3011\">symbolic and historical importance<\/strong>, through its church, its chapels and the village's collective memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3087\" data-end=\"3090\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3092\" data-end=\"3120\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><strong data-start=\"3096\" data-end=\"3120\">A living heritage<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3422\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 16pt;\">The parish of Oizy remains a precious witness to the religious history of the region. <strong data-start=\"3200\" data-end=\"3226\">province of Luxembourg<\/strong>. Its heritage, its archives and the memories of the generations that have shaped it tell the story of an Ardennes region marked by faith, solidarity and attachment to its traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3422\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">List of parish priests since XVI<sup>e<\/sup> century to the 20<sup>e<\/sup><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1050\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong data-start=\"1033\" data-end=\"1050\">XVII\u1d49 century<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"402\" data-end=\"478\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"402\" data-end=\"417\">1581 - 1592 : <\/strong>Jean <strong data-start=\"425\" data-end=\"437\">Hustinay<\/strong> is the parish priest.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"488\">1597 : <\/strong>Darius <strong data-start=\"498\" data-end=\"506\">Dave<\/strong> is mentioned as the parish priest.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"549\">1602 - 1620 : <\/strong>Jean <strong data-start=\"557\" data-end=\"569\">de Villy<\/strong> is responsible for parish ministry.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"618\">1620 - 1646 : <\/strong>Godefroid <strong data-start=\"631\" data-end=\"641\">Lambin<\/strong>, died on 31 March 1620.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"683\">1646 - 1652 : <\/strong>Adam <strong data-start=\"691\" data-end=\"704\">d'Ardenne<\/strong>, Doctor of Theology. During the wars, he retired to H\u00e9ron (Li\u00e8ge), where he performed vicarial duties.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"833\">1652 - 1670 : <\/strong>Guillaume <strong data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"854\">Lupi<\/strong>, who was later appointed parish priest of Saint-Cl\u00e9ment in Li\u00e8ge.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"911\" data-end=\"926\">1670 - 1684 : <\/strong>Jacques <strong data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"947\">Fabius<\/strong>, He was absent from the parish during the war.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1027\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1050\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"1033\" data-end=\"1050\">XVIII\u1d49 century<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1112\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1067\">1685 - 1738 :<\/strong><\/span><br data-start=\"1067\" data-end=\"1070\" \/><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Pierre <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1088\">Gillard<\/strong>, from Gedinne.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1129\">1685 - 1738 : <\/strong>Jean <strong data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1148\">Collart<\/strong>, The first vicar of Oizy in 1684, he was appointed parish priest by papal bull in January 1685. A native of Maissin, he died on 23 February 1738 at the age of 83, after 57 years of priesthood and 53 years of ministry in Oizy. A priest highly esteemed for his pastoral zeal, he was buried in the church, between the two small altars. <em data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1500\">(Source: burial record)<br \/>\n<\/em><strong data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"1517\">1738 - 1747 : <\/strong>Jean <strong data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1538\">Bourgerie<\/strong>, a native of Paliseul. He signed his first death certificate on 3 April 1737 as curate of Oizy. He died on 20 February 1748.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"1677\" data-end=\"1692\">1748 - 1763 : <\/strong>Pierre <strong data-start=\"1702\" data-end=\"1715\">Louveign\u00e9<\/strong>, de Soiron, parish priest of Oizy until his death in 1763.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"1769\" data-end=\"1784\">1763 - 1791 : <\/strong>Fran\u00e7ois Joseph <strong data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"1814\">Favaige<\/strong>, Born in La Vieille Salm, he was the son of Jean Salomon Favaige and Anne Balthus. He was baptised on 17 May 1727, ordained a priest on 27 May 1752 and appointed parish priest of Oizy by the abbot and prince of Stavelot, Dom Alexandre Delmotte. He died in Oizy on 26 December 1791.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2075\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2077\" data-end=\"2096\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2081\" data-end=\"2096\">XIX\u1d49 century<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2098\" data-end=\"2177\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2098\" data-end=\"2106\">1792 : <\/strong>Nicolas <strong data-start=\"2117\" data-end=\"2126\">L\u00e9gu\u00ff<\/strong>, priest serving at Oizy from 6 June 1792.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2179\" data-end=\"2194\">1792 - 1807 : <\/strong>Jean-Baptiste <strong data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2220\">Andr\u00e9<\/strong>, a native of Maissin. He celebrated the first baptism on 16 July 1792 and died in Oizy on 4 November 1807.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2332\" data-end=\"2347\">1807 - 1813 : <\/strong>Fran\u00e7ois <strong data-start=\"2359\" data-end=\"2370\">Delvaux<\/strong>, parish priest.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2379\" data-end=\"2394\">1813 - 1814 : <\/strong>C. J. <strong data-start=\"2403\" data-end=\"2412\">Petit<\/strong>, parish priest of Bi\u00e8vre, provisional administrator.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2458\" data-end=\"2473\">1815 - 1816 <\/strong>Jean-Baptiste <strong data-start=\"2490\" data-end=\"2501\">Magonet<\/strong>, Magonet was born in Petit-Fays on 13 August 1766, the son of Jean-Joseph Magonet and Marie-Joseph Hubert. He died in Oizy on 28 April 1816.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2646\" data-end=\"2661\">1816 - 1827 : <\/strong>Dom <strong data-start=\"2668\" data-end=\"2678\">Martin<\/strong>, a monk from the abbey of Laval-Dieu, who died in Bouillon in 1827.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2745\" data-end=\"2760\">1828 - 1831 : <\/strong>Lambert <strong data-start=\"2771\" data-end=\"2782\">Lenfant<\/strong>, Born in Tintigny, he was formerly curate at Monceau. A priest of great apostolic zeal, he was then parish priest of Villers-le-Gambon, Gesves and Baronville. He died in retirement in Namur on 20 November 1883.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"2993\" data-end=\"3008\">1831 - 1859: <\/strong>Victor <strong data-start=\"3018\" data-end=\"3029\">Butsin<\/strong>, Born on 15 September 1788 in Fays-les-Veneurs. As a priest, vicar of M\u00e9zi\u00e8res and then parish priest of Gesponsard, he was renowned for his energy, culture and medical knowledge. He died in the hamlet of Six-Planes on 8 January 1876, where he had promoted the construction of a chapel.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"3322\" data-end=\"3337\">1859 - 1869 : <\/strong>Fran\u00e7ois Nicolas Joseph <strong data-start=\"3364\" data-end=\"3376\">Fran\u00e7ois<\/strong>, Bertrix, initially curate at Izel. He died as parish priest of Chassepierre on 4 December 1878.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"3477\" data-end=\"3492\">1869 - 1881 : <\/strong>Nicolas Joseph <strong data-start=\"3510\" data-end=\"3519\">Rolin<\/strong>, Born in Ochamps on 1\u1d49\u02b3 March 1828. Arriving in Oizy on 8 March 1869 from Grapfontaine, he left the parish on 7 January 1882 for Suxarl\u00e9e. <em data-start=\"3669\" data-end=\"3715\">(Source: Oizy population register).<br \/>\n<\/em><strong data-start=\"3717\" data-end=\"3732\">1882 - 1891 : <\/strong>Fran\u00e7ois <strong data-start=\"3744\" data-end=\"3753\">Adnet<\/strong>, born in Florenville on 29 January 1852, son of Jean Nicolas and Marguerite Ponsart. He arrived from Houffalize on 11 January 1882 and left Oizy for Paliseul on 8 October 1891.<\/span><br data-start=\"3927\" data-end=\"3930\" \/><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em data-start=\"3930\" data-end=\"4019\">(Sources: Oizy population register and his mother's death certificate, 12 March 1886)<br \/>\n<\/em><strong data-start=\"4021\" data-end=\"4036\">1893 - 1903 : <\/strong>Henri Joseph <strong data-start=\"4052\" data-end=\"4063\">Lemaire<\/strong>, born in Houdemont on 10 November 1858. He arrived in Oizy on 1\u1d49\u02b3 February 1893, coming from Samr\u00e9e, and left the parish on 9 March 1903 for Rulles (Luxembourg).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4218\" data-end=\"4221\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4223\" data-end=\"4241\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"4227\" data-end=\"4241\">XX\u1d49 century<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4243\" data-end=\"4403\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"4243\" data-end=\"4258\">1903 - 1911 : <\/strong>Camille <strong data-start=\"4269\" data-end=\"4278\">Donis<\/strong>, born on 7 February 1874 in Yzier (Luxembourg). He arrived from Dinant on 7 June 1903 and left Oizy on 20 November 1911 for Mettet.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"4405\" data-end=\"4420\">1911 - 1933 : <\/strong>Ernest Joseph <strong data-start=\"4437\" data-end=\"4447\">Burton<\/strong>, Born in Nimbermont (Remagne) on 15 August 1875. He arrived in Oizy on 28 August 1911 and died there on 1\u1d49\u02b3 March 1933.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"4554\" data-end=\"4569\">1933 - 1952 : <\/strong>Jean-Baptiste <strong data-start=\"4586\" data-end=\"4597\">Collard<\/strong>, born in Opont on 28 August 1887. Arrived in Oizy on 4 April 1933, coming from My.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong data-start=\"4673\" data-end=\"4688\">1952 - 2001 : <\/strong>Joseph Adolphe <strong data-start=\"4706\" data-end=\"4717\">Mathieu<\/strong>, priest of Oizy and Baillamont. Born in Rienne on 9 February 1909, son of Joseph Adolphe and Marie Appoline Michaux.
