D\u00e9sir\u00e9 F\u00e9licien Fran\u00e7ois Joseph MERCIER<\/b>he was born in Braine-l'Alleud on\u00a021 November 1851, Fifth child of<\/time>\u00a0son of Paul L\u00e9on Hubert MERCIER<\/strong> and Marie Barbe CROQUET<\/strong>and died in Brussels on\u00a022 January 1926<\/time>Ordained a priest on 04\/04 1874 by Cardinal Giacomo Cattani. He was made a cardinal on 15\/04\/1907 by Pope Pius X. Primate of Belgium, and\u00a016e<\/sup><\/abbr>\u00a0Archbishop of Malines (1906-1926), he was a key figure in the early days of ecumenism (the\u00a0Conversations from Mechelen<\/i>\u00a0with the Anglicans) as well as the national resistance to the German occupation of Belgium during the First World War.\n<\/span><\/p>\nA Catholic secondary school for boys was set up thanks to the dean of Braine-l'Alleud, Abb\u00e9 Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric GLIBERT<\/strong>who, by approaching Cardinal Mercier, obtained permission to set up a college in Braine-l'Alleud. On 22 September 1923, the Cardinal entrusted Abb\u00e9 Ren\u00e9 VERBRUGGEN<\/strong> to found the Coll\u00e8ge. On 7 May 1924, the College opened in a provisional building with four pupils, two boarders and two day pupils, grouped together in a preparatory year 7 (primary year 6).
