{"id":561,"date":"2013-07-18T17:26:54","date_gmt":"2013-07-18T15:26:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/geniwal.be\/?p=561"},"modified":"2023-04-10T23:40:13","modified_gmt":"2023-04-10T21:40:13","slug":"lhistoire-des-enfants-trouves-a-tournai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geniwal.be\/en\/nos-pistes\/pistes-genealogiques-en-belgique\/lhistoire-des-enfants-trouves-a-tournai\/","title":{"rendered":"The history of foundlings in Tournai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The history of foundlings in Tournai is relatively well known, and several local historians have written about it.<br \/>\nHoverlant (a Tournai lawyer and justice of the peace, known for the enormous work he bequeathed, entitled \"Essai chronologique pour servir \u00e0 l'histoire de Tournai\" from Julius Caesar to the 18th century, in 114 volumes!) left us the memory of a ruling by the Tournai Parliament, dated 22 November 1683,<br \/>\nA number of Tournai's foundlings went on to achieve a degree of fame, including the sculptor and man of letters Eug\u00e8ne EREBE and the popular Alexis SARAGOSSE.<br \/>\nThese foundlings were entrusted to \"foster fathers and mothers\", who saw this above all as an opportunity to make extra money.  This was a long-standing practice and, as you can imagine, was open to abuse.<br \/>\nIn addition to the city of Tournai itself, the main towns that took in foundlings were Rumes, Taintignies, Vaulx and Esplechin.<br \/>\n(source: Les enfants trouv\u00e9s \u00e0 Tournai dans la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du XIXe si\u00e8cle, by A.
