Liberal politician, born in Bruges on 18 January 1796 and died in Brussels on 20 April 1860. Son of Charles de BROUCKERE<\/strong> and de STOOP<\/strong> Colette, married at Maastricht on 02\/09\/1819 Netherlands to VISSCHERS Marie Gertrude<\/strong> born 02 September 1798 in Maastricht, died 07\/02\/1876 in Brussels, daughter of VISSCHERS Guillaume and NIJST Marie Elisabeth. Elisabeth Marie Charlotte was born of this union. de BROUCKERE <\/strong>born on 24\/07\/1820, Alfred de BROUCKERE born<\/strong> 19\/02\/1827 and Caroline Marie de BROUCKERE <\/strong>born on 22\/08\/1828 all in Maastricht (Netherlands) then attached to Belgium until 1839, lawyer, in 1815 artillery officer, in 1824 member of the provincial states and of the permanent deputation of Limbourg, in 1826 member of the second chamber of the states general under the Dutch regime, in 1830 Colonel of Artillery and Military Governor of the Province of Li\u00e8ge, member of the Constitution Committee, he played an important role in the Belgian Revolution, in 1831 member of the National Congress for the district of Hasselt, in 1831 aide-de-camp to the King, he represented the district of Brussels in the Chamber from 1831 to 1832, in 1831 he became Minister of Finance and the Interior, then Minister of War between 1831 and 1832, in 1834 Professor at the Universit\u00e9 libre de Bruxelles where he taught special mathematics, astronomy, statistics and political economy, in 1835 Director of the Bank of Belgium, in 1847 he was a member of the Brussels Municipal Council, and from 1848 to 1856 and 1857 to 1860 a member of the House of Representatives, in 1851 and 1855 chairman of the Belgian commission at the Universal Exhibitions in London and Paris, and in 1848 mayor of Brussels, a post he held until his death at 10 a.m. on 20 April 1860. He was the brother of Henri de BROUCKERE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Funerary monument: de BROUCKERE Charles Marie Joseph at the Brussels cemetery<\/p><\/div>\n

His funeral took place on 22 April 1860, on a foggy, cold day, led by an imposing procession to the ancient collegiate church of Saints Michel and Gudule. He was then taken to the town's main cemetery. Charles Marie Joseph de BROUCKERE<\/strong> was transferred in 1871 from the Quartier L\u00e9opold cemetery<\/em> located in the commune of Saint-Josse, near the necropolis of the city of Brussels. His funerary monument was designed in 1861 by the architect BEYAERT<\/strong><\/a> and the sculptor FIERS<\/strong>It is located on the 8th lawn of the rondpoint des bourgmestres, concession no. 12. The monument is made of French stone with the following symbols: a cross \"one of the symbols attested to since the most ancient times, in Egypt, China, Knossos and Crete\", a flame \"In all traditions, the flame is the symbol of purification, illumination and spiritual love. It is the image of spirit and transcendence, the soul of fire\", upside-down torches \"can be associated with the eternal flame, the upside-down torch is the genie of death\", falling leaves and ivy branches.<\/span><\/p>\n
