L'assemblea dei vescovi (la maggior parte dei quali erano italiani) doveva solo prendere decisioni che venivano discusse e proposte da commissioni nominate dai legati papali.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Le prime sessioni furono un fallimento a causa della discrepanza tra le aspirazioni del popolo e dei suoi sovrani e i temi trattati dal Concilio. Alcuni volevano la fine degli abusi della Chiesa e una riforma completa delle sue istituzioni, mentre le discussioni si concentrarono sulla scelta dei testi canonici, sulla giustificazione per fede e sui sette sacramenti (matrimonio, battesimo, ecc.). Di fatto, la Chiesa chiar\u00ec la sua posizione nei confronti della dottrina protestante, ma non fece autocritica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Nel 1547, le ripetute proteste dei prelati per la presenza della peste alle porte della citt\u00e0 costrinsero a spostare il concilio a Bologna.
