A cartulary * (from medieval latin chartulariuma collection of documents; the classical Latin chartapaper") is "a collection of copies of one's own documents drawn up by a natural or legal person who, in a volume or, more rarely, in a roll, transcribes or has transcribed, in full or sometimes in extracts, deeds relating to his property and rights and documents concerning his history or administration, in order to ensure their preservation and facilitate consultation".
Most of the cartularies that have come down to us, as the list below shows, come from religious institutions, generally abbeys or cathedrals.
