Founded in 1979, at 31 December 2012 the CGF had 5,720 members. The CGF is a member of the FFG, the UGBH and participates in the GENEABANK system. This association has analysed more than 2,500 registers, representing more than 100 linear metres of paper records, which can be consulted in the 3 branches in Brest, Quimper and Morlaix.

The Relecq Kerhuon reading room has paper records for the Léon area, while the Crozon reading room has records for the Crozon peninsula and the Moëlan sur Mer reading room has records for the Quimperlé area.
- At its three branches in Brest, Morlaix and Quimper, the association has a set of microfilms of Finistère civil registers. However, these microfilms, produced by the Archives, only concern part of the Finistère registers and can be consulted in the 3 branches.
- The association has computerised its paper records in a database called RECIF. As of May 2013, the database contained more than 8,008,000 records, with almost all filiations, godparents and witnesses indicated. Members can consult them free of charge on the Internet at the following address: http://cgf.cgf.asso.fr (personalised access codes provided on joining). Other databases also exist and can be accessed in the same way: Base HORSEC, which includes the convicts of Brest and the civilian and military victims of recent conflicts in Finistère, and the BAGAD database, which includes the genealogies of members.
- The base of the sabotiers de Bretagne is freely accessible to all. (members and non-members)
- The database of paper manufacturers in Brittany is only accessible to members, as is the database of guardianships and marriage decrees.
- The association publishes an 80-page quarterly magazine, with a print run of 5,300 copies. It was awarded the prize for the best genealogical magazine in France at the 2007 FFG congress in Tours. Members can access the magazine online, except for a three-year waiting period. You can search back issues by typing in a word, a name, etc.
- The association has also set up a discussion forum with over 6,300 members. It can be found at http://www.cgf-forum.fr. Access is free (members and non-members) and is open to anyone interested in genealogy in Finistère.
- For fans of discussion lists, the CGF has also opened a list at the following address: cgf29@yahoogroupes.fr
- But the forum remains by far the most visited by genealogists in Finistère.
- A good address and a mine of information: For answers to the most common questions asked by genealogists, don't forget to consult the CGF's GENEADICO, which can be found on the general site at the following address: http://www.cgf.asso.fr/users/cgfadmin/lesoutils/?page_id=53
