Welcome to the
Genealogical research and family tracing in Germany
What you need to know:
Parish registers German archives are the property of the Church, and therefore of the parishes and then of the episcopal archives. You will not find these archives in municipal, Land or federal archives.
German civil registers began around 1871, particularly in Baden, and in some Landers the date varies between 1871 and 1876.
Germany allows each Länd to legislate independently, so the rules governing civil status may vary from one Länd to another. It is possible to obtain records in Germany by contacting the civil registry office (Standesamt). There is a charge of around €7, but the system works well. Requests can be made by e-mail in German or English, but the reply will always be in German.
To consult the registers, you need to know how to read Gothic German.
