Etienne Arthur Joseph Ghislain MASSON was born on 22 February 1896 in Rièzes-les Chimay (Rièzes (in wallon Rieze) is a section of the Belgian town from Chimay. It was a commune in its own right before the amalgamation of municipalities in 1977. Son of MASSON Jules and BAYONNEZ Juliette. The village, situated in the extreme south of the province of Hainautis bordered by the French borderHe completed his secondary education at the Collège épiscopal in Chimay and at the Catholic University of Louvain. He made his career in teaching (Athénée de Nivelles) where he proved to be an excellent French language teacher. He married Anna FRENAY 3 children were born of this union. Arthur MASSON discovered his vocation as a novelist. He described the lives of ordinary people and villages with humour. As a result, he has been compared to Daudet and Marcel Pagnol. Arthur Masson died in Namur on 28 July 1970 at the age of 74. He left behind a body of work that has been passed down through the generations and continues to be published.
