The Belgian revolution of 1830

To mark the King's 58th birthday William 1st (William-Frédéric ORANGE-NASSAU (1772-1843) King of the Pays-Bas and Sovereign Prince of the Netherlands (1813-1815 husband of Henriette Adrienne Louise Fleur d'OULTREMONT de WEGIMONT et de WARFUSEE (1792-1864) son of William V of ORANGE-NASSAU and Wilhelmine of PRUSSIA (1774-1837)..        

On 25 August 1830 in Brussels to celebrate the King's birthday. An opera was performed in 5 acts "La muette de Portici de Daniel Esprit François AUBERT (1782-1871), to the words of Eugène SCRIBE (1791-1861) and Louis Marie Germain DE LA VIGNE or DELAVIGNE (1790-1868) . This work was the starting point for the Belgian revolution. It describes on stage a revolt in Portici near Naples in the 17th century against Spanish domination. The Belgian people were also familiar with this situation at the time. In Act 3 following Scene 4, played by the tenor Jean François LAFEUILLADE he shouted "To arms, to arms! The enthusiastic audience rose to its feet and sang "National, national! " . Within a few days, total anarchy ensued. Brussels was looted and burnt. The inhabitants of the various regions is organisednt. The Belgian revolution led to independence after the fighting.
