Biography :

With a doctorate in law from the Catholic University of Louvain and landed gentry, he was one of the pioneers of Christian democracy in Walloon Brabant.
He devoted his youth to the working class, where he contributed to the improvement of the working class both politically and socially. In 1889, he was president of the Jeune garde catholique and of the Ligue des Capacitaires de Nivelles, which he founded in the Nivelles district. He was particularly in favour of universal suffrage, tempered by plural voting. That same year, Pope Leo XIII encouraged social Catholicism. He set up the Democratic League in the province of Brabant.
He was elected to the Nivelles Municipal Council on 19 October 1890, then alderman on 06 April 1891. Following the introduction of universal plural suffrage, he became deputy for Nivelles in the House of Representatives in 1896, where he served until 1900. In 1908 he replaced J. BRABANT deceased. He was not re-elected in 1910. The following year, following the resignation of G. SNOY he becomes a Member of Parliament again by taking up his seat. His term of office ended during the Great War. In 1905, the King appointed him Mayor of Nivelles (cité des Aclots).
During the First World War, the town of Nivelles was not affected by the massacres of the German invasion, but was subjected to the conditions of occupation imposed by the occupying forces. He became involved in his moral mission. In April 1915, he was arrested for helping to distribute relief supplies to railway workers who refused to work for the occupying forces. He refused to provide a list of the "unemployed" in his town. He was imprisoned for four months in Nivelles and then deported to Germany, where he contracted a long and painful illness. The Germans considered him to be seriously ill and "undesirable". Thanks to the intervention of the Red Cross, he was transferred to Switzerland, where he never returned from exile. His mortal remains were not brought back to Nivelles until Saturday 24 April 1920, the day of the official religious ceremony. His body was then transported to the family vault in Feluy before being transferred to Nivelles, where it remains to this day.
