The law that organises of the National Militia is that of 8 January 1817. It was successively modified or interpreted by laws on the following dates:

Independently of the army and the navy, there will be in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in accordance with Article 206 of the Fundamental Law, a national militia corps, the strength of which will always be in the proportion of one man for every hundred souls of the total population of the Kingdom. This corps will be composed of infantry, artillery, cavalry and train. The militia will be made up of volunteers, as far as possible. Are part of the national militia in view of the draw (art 73) organised by the governor. The drawing of lots must begin no later than 1st March of each year. 5 registers have been created in accordance with article 49. The first for those aged 19 and over (1st class), the second for those aged 20 and over (2nd class), the third for those aged 21 and over (3rd class), the fourth for those aged 22 and over (4th class) and finally the 5th for those aged 23 and over (5th class). The law includes the organisation of the drawing, the exemptions were modified by the law of 27 April 1820, 21 December 1824, 20 March 1835, the replacement and substitution law of 28 March 1835 and the law of 08 May 1847, the militia councils (art 111 etc.) All the militia documents are found in the marriage appendices deposited in the Kingdom's General Archives. The card describes exactly the name, date of birth, father's and mother's names, registration in the commune, the levy, the number of the draw stipulating that the person has completely fulfilled the obligations imposed by the law on the militia.
