La paroisse d’OIZY en province du Luxembourg belge

The parish of OIZY in the province of Belgian Luxembourg

The parish of Oizy Province of Luxembourg - Belgium Situated in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, in the province of Luxembourg, the parish of Oizy has an ancient religious history that is deeply linked to the rural life of the region. For several centuries, it was an important spiritual centre for the surrounding villages and hamlets. An ancient parish with an extensive territory From the Middle Ages onwards, Oizy established itself as a mother parish on which many other localities depended. Its territory included Baillamont, Waillamont, Aisies, the house of Achy, as well as several mills established along the watercourses, known as Rouillaumoulin, Royaumoulin or Ruaumoulin. In the XVIᵉ century, faced with the remoteness of the hamlets and the increase in population, several parish reorganisations were put in place. In 1586, Gros-Fays, along with Six-Planes and Cornimont, as well as Chairière, were detached from the parish of Oizy to become autonomous entities. Other chapels were also built, notably in Petit-Fays and Monceau, making it easier for the inhabitants to worship. Archives and religious organisation The parish archives of Oizy preserve important documents in Latin relating to the erection of chapels and the creation of new parishes at the end of the XVIᵉ century. These texts bear witness to the major administrative and spiritual role played by Oizy in the region. Over the centuries, numerous parish priests and vicars succeeded one another at the head of the parish. Some exercised their ministry for long periods, leaving a deep mark on the local community through their pastoral commitment. Among them was Jean Collart, parish priest from 1685 to 1738, who administered the parish for over fifty years and was buried in the church...

Rhisnes, un patrimoine funéraire à travers ses épitaphes

Rhisnes, a funerary heritage through its epitaphs

The task of transcribing a cemetery consists of recording, preserving and making the most of the information engraved on the tombstones. Each inscription - whether a name, a date or an epitaph - is a fragment of memory, a testimony to the past and a precious source for historical and genealogical research. The process begins with a systematic survey of the graves: locating the graves, photographing the monuments, then faithfully transcribing the inscriptions. This work requires rigour and care, as ancient stones are sometimes altered by time, making the texts difficult to decipher. Once transcribed, the data is structured and entered into our «Isadora» database (surnames, first names, dates of birth and death, special mentions, professions, titles, etc.). This sorting enables researchers, descendants and heritage enthusiasts to access the information easily. Beyond the practical dimension, the transcription of cemeteries plays a heritage and memorial role: it saves inscriptions that are in danger of disappearing. It brings past generations back to life. It sheds light on the evolution of funerary practices, funerary art and local history. In this way, the cemetery is no longer just a place of remembrance, but also a stone book where each grave tells a story, which transcription helps to preserve and pass on. Important note: The transcription of the gravestones in the cemetery concerns only those ancient monuments that are still present and legible, and only those inscriptions that can be deciphered. As far as possible, we have verified the information on the basis of the birth certificates available on the AGATHA website.

Alphonse BELIN

Alphonse BELIN

Researching Alphonse BELIN When I started my genealogical research just over 3 years ago, I discovered the existence of my great-grandfather Emile Belin. No-one had ever really told me about him until now (nor had I ever asked when I was younger). By looking at the family record book, I discovered his brothers and sisters and his parents. I invite you to consult my tree on Geneanet (invitation on request). I began to take an interest in Alphonse when I discovered on Émile's service record the words "4th Category 1 brother killed". The only brother Émile had was Alphonse, the eldest (there was another brother, but he died in his first year). He's the only one to have been born in Belgium, so he was attached to the Belgian army. Hence my difficulty in finding a service record. I said to myself that if it says this, it means that this brother died for his country... (on the forums, someone told me that it could be a transcription error with a homonym. There is in fact an A. Belin from Wattrelos who died for France at that time, but it's not my Alphonse Belin, it's someone else). On the site of the Royal Museum of the Belgian Army I was just able to find this information: So a file number (PP 075044) and in type (after thinking for months that it was the name of a town) it says Steekkaart Pol. Gevangenen = Political prisoner file. What a surprise! Given that Alphonse died in...

Les croix d’occis

The Occis crosses

An occis cross is a small stone monument, in the shape of a cross, generally erected at ground level at the side of a road or path, at the exact spot where a person died, often violently (by crime or accident). Very often, an inscription carved into the stone or inscribed on the cross, of variable length, recalls the memory of the deceased and sometimes the circumstances of his or her death. An occis cross, which never includes the figure of Christ (it is not a crucifix), is not directly linked to the Christian religion, and is not in itself a Christian monument. A little girl was murdered and found dead in a wood in Gerpinnes. She lived in Acoz and was raped as a ’martyr of virtue’. Comment éviter les pièges (2ème partie)

How to avoid the pitfalls (part 2)

If you see your name written differently in different deeds. This does not mean that they are not your ancestors. Only filiation can determine which ancestor is identified in relation to another! Filiation: Principle that specifies the transmission of kinship. There is a filiation link between two individuals when one descends from the other or when both descend from the same person. All the social processes that define, from generation to generation, the kinship between individuals or the quality of membership of a social group Natural filiation: Kinship link that unites a child to its father (paternal filiation), its mother (maternal filiation) or both (parental filiation, which is only used when the child's parents are not legally married. Illegitimate filiation: As long as a child born out of wedlock has not been voluntarily recognised or has not established his filiation in court, he is legally a stranger to his father and mother, who are under no obligation to feed, maintain or educate him. He or she is not entitled to inherit from them, but like any foreigner, he or she can receive gifts from them or be made their legatee. If your ancestor has a fairly common name, don't fall into the trap of homonymy. Often the repetition of the same first names can cause problems. You need to cross-check your sources! Homonymy: The quality of being homonymous. Homonym: Refers to a person, town, etc. that has the same proper name as another. Age: Often transcribed in records, for example in...

Les erreurs en généalogie (1ère partie)

Errors in genealogy (Part 1)

Introduction Most genealogists are aware of the existence of errors in their work and are keen to track them down. On many homepages published on the Internet, the author of a genealogy warns the reader: "This genealogy undoubtedly contains errors". What are the most common causes of these diverse inaccuracies? It is difficult to classify them in order of importance, but we will mention a few below: data entry errors and typing «mistakes» difficulty in reading or interpreting certain records the first name, village or profession becomes the surname confusion between surnames in the record (eg: confusion between surnames in the record (e.g. the wife mistaken for the deceased) a lack of rigour (date of birth / date of baptism, etc.) an error made in an original record by its writer or declarant information taken from genealogies or the Internet without verification confusion between individuals with the same name methodological errors (e.g. unproven filiations, hypotheses, etc.) Your genealogy software will not be a very effective safeguard against errors. It will no doubt point out the inconsistency of a parentage in which the mother is 10 years old, or an aberrant age. But if you link a child to the wrong father..., the software will itself be a source of errors, often because of its - very practical - advanced features. For example, auto-completion can transform a «François» into a «Françoise», an individual to whom the software automatically assigns the female sex. An unfortunate merging of two individuals or the integration of...
